Luslaida Barbosa

Lieutenant Luslaida Barbosa is currently in her first year of study at the University of North Texas pursuing a Master of Music degree in conducting. She is an active duty Naval Officer (Bandmaster) who was selected for the Naval Postgraduate School. Her responsibilities include working with student ensembles and assisting with the daily operations of the wind studies department.

A native of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, Lt. Barbosa auditioned and was accepted in the United States Navy Music Program in November 1996 as a clarinet instrumentalist. Throughout her 22-year career she has deployed on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19), USS John McCain (DDG56), USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), USS Harpers Ferry (LSD49) and has supported numerous humanitarian and diplomatic operations throughout Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean, the Indo-Asia-Pacific Region and around the Eastern United States.

After various tours in Yokosuka Japan, and Naples, Italy, she was commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer Bandmaster in 2012 and was promoted to the rank of Ensign. Following her commission, she was assigned asTraining Officer at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, where she coordinated and oversaw the training for Army, Navy and Marine Corps musicians.

In 2014, she was assigned to United States Navy Band in Washington DC where she served as Associate Conductor for the Concert/Ceremonial Bands in addition to her duties Admin, Legal, and Security Officer. In June 2017, she assumed the duties as Director, Navy Band Southeast where she led her team in performances throughout the Southeast Region including Cuba and Puerto Rico.

She has studied conducting with Professors Anthony Maiello, Tim Robblee, and Erin Bodnar as well as participating in conducting workshops held by H. Robert Reynolds, Mallory Thompson and Gary Hill. In 2017, she was invited to conduct in Puerto Rico at a concert for the family hosted by the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Her personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards). She holds a Bachelor of Humanities from Thomas Edison State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and is a graduate of both Unit Leader and Senior Musician courses at the Naval School of Music in Norfolk, VA.
